Online Dating
Marissa, age 15, Maryland
“I was talking on the internet to this man for a long time. I knew he was older than me and I don’t know why I kept on talking to him, but I one day fell into his game and agreed to meet him. I was only 14 years old, so I didn’t know what love was.
Well I started sneaking out of the house at night to have sex with him. My parents found out about it and caught me sneaking out. They found out because my friend told my dad. I thought it was the end of the world.
Well, my parents pressed charges on him and I hated my dad. My dad and I got in a big fight and I moved out. Now I’m living in an RTC (Residential Treatment Center) where I’m getting counseling. If my friend hadn’t told on me, I could be dead. I’m glad I got help.”
Note from Deb: Thanks for sharing your story Marissa—that took a lot of guts. Your story is a good reminder to watch out for online “teen-dating services” and chat rooms. Chances are that you’re not chatting with another teen, but a pedophile/predator adult. Most teenagers find relationships at school, work, church, and through friends. Again, thanks for sharing—and I’m glad you went for counseling and support!
