Long Distance Love
Gabriel, age 16
“When my girlfriend, Lia, moved 300 miles away with her family, it sucked. We both hated it, but her dad got transferred for work. Being 16 doesn’t give you a lot of say in your family’s decisions.
Lia and I have gone together since last school year. She is totally cool and I know she loves me. We instant message every day, and talk on the phone once in a while, but having a long distance relationship is harder than I thought.
I really miss just hanging out and spending time with her. 300 miles is just far enough that it’s not easy to see each other often, so we can’t just get together whenever we want. Every time we talk on the phone, it reminds me of how much I miss her.
I feel like an idiot, because I don’t want to tell my friends that I miss her as much as I do. Plus, I don’t know how long I can keep going in a long-distance relationship. There isn’t anyone else that I want to date, but I know that being attached doesn’t make it easy to go out with other girls.
My older brother says I should break up with Lia so we both can move on and see other people. This just isn’t an easy situation. It sucks as much as I thought it would.”
